The Get UpĀ® campaign was launched by U.S. Figure Skating in 2017 to help skaters and non-skaters alike to recognize the grit, passion and perseverance needed to Get Up in the rink and in life every day. The 2021 Get Up Virtual 5K presented by Guaranteed Rate is a nationwide celebration of strength and resilience and can be completed on or off the ice!
Rather than racing against a clock or competing for the fastest time, participants are encouraged to complete the 5K in honor of someone or something that helped them through a personal Get Up moment.
On Feb. 15, 1961, a tragedy shook the figure skating world when Sabena Flight 548, carrying the 1961 U.S. World Team to the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia, crashed in Berg-Kampenhout, about 45 minutes outside of Brussels, Belgium. This is arguably the biggest "Get Up moment" in the history of figure skating in the United States. Therefore, all participants will be issued a 1961 race bib honoring those that perished in the crash, and all net proceeds affiliated with the Get Up Virtual 5K will benefit the Memorial Fund.
