ALL912 - American Literature/IEW Writing - 8:25 - 10:10 am - 9th-12th grade Taught by Robin McCall. As students are exposed to great works of American Literature, their thinking, comprehension, and writing skills will all be enhanced. Lightning Literature and Composition is an 8 unit course in which we examine influential Early American novels, short stories and poetry to develop students’ abilities to read deeply and analyze what they are reading. Each lesson includes a biography of the author, comprehension questions, literary lessons and writing exercises. Along with Lightning Literature, during the first semester of the course we will walk through IEW’s Student Writing Intensive Level C which will include key word outlines and summarizing from notes, followed by story sequence, note taking and study skills, report writing, and an introduction to essay writing. Except for our unit on story sequencing, all writing assignments will be directly integrated with the literary works we are studying.During the second semester we will use The Elegant Essay: Building Blocks for Analytical Writing. This is a comprehensive course of study on the elements of essay form and structure. ALIEW58 - American Literature/IEW Level B Continuation Course - 10:15 am - 12:00 pm - 5th-8th grade This writing course takes your 5th-8th graders’ writing skills to the next level. After a brief review of note-taking and outlining, our coursework this year will include creative writing, writing research reports from multiple sources, writing five paragraph essays, reporting findings based on real and imagined interviews (journalism), writing letters, and writing book and movie critiques. As we write, students will learn a variety of stylistic techniques, including the use of effective vocabulary, complex sentence structure, and literary devices such as dramatic openers and similes. Students will also learn to edit their own work for grammar, syntax and usage. All writing assignments will be integrated with Early American History and Literature.PREREQUISITES: Review will be imbedded in the class presentations, but it will help if your student has a fair understanding of the following ideas: Note-taking and writing from “key word outlines," The six “Dress-up” techniques and five Sentence Openers, Story Sequence, Titles, Topic-Clincher paragraph rule.
Fifth graders who have not taken an IEW course should take Cornerstone’s IEW Level B, Part I. If your 6th-8th grader has never taken an IEW course, he/she can still be successful in this class. IEWB46 - Institute for Excellence in Writing B - 12:30 - 1:20 pm - 4th-6th Grades - “Mom, I don’t know what to write! I don’t even know where to get started!” Trying to write without a mental framework for the writing process is frustrating and discouraging. During this course, students will hone their writing skills by working through eight progressive units which are designed not only to teach writing, but also to improve their ability to think clearly and to express their thoughts eloquently. Students will learn the writing process by practicing the skills of outlining and summarizing, organizing story sequences, writing reports from single references, writing creatively using sequential pictures, writing basic essays, and writing research reports. IEW13 - Institute for Excellence in Writing Workshop - 12:30 - 1:20 pm - 1st-3rd grades Taught by Lydia Matthews. GDLS13 - God's Design for Life - 10:15 - 11:05 - 1st-3rd grades Taught by Heather Henriques. Explore God’s creation with this gentle and fun introduction to the wonders of biology - plants, animals, and the human body. This two-semester class for younger students will focus on hands-on exploration, supplemented by literature connections, games, and notebooking/lapbooking. The syllabus for this course will also coordinate chapters from the Elementary Apologia texts, for those families who enjoy that series or already have them at home. BIOA - Biology by Apologia - 11:10-12:00/Lunch/12:30-1:20 - 9th-12th grade - 2 semester course Taught by Mitzi Howard - designed as a high school science credit course including lab work. Students will take their first detailed look at the science of biology. In this course we will be learning about cell life, genetics, creation science, ecology, insects, plants, reptiles, mammals, and more. Training in microscope use and dissection will be included. The course begins with a “macro” view of our living world. Your students will learn about Kingdoms and Phyla and the steps needed to identify and classify many animals and plants. Student move on to the “micro” perspective with single-celled organisms and their reproduction, advance to genetics and finish with ecosystems. In the second semester we will be studying kingdom Animalia and dissecting an earthworm, crayfish, perch, and a frog.. maybe more. Students taking these labs are usually in 9th grade at least before studying this material. Our work will show the fallacies of evolution and strengthen our understanding of what our Creator has done. AMH911 - American History by Notgrass - 10:15 - 11:05 am - 9th-11th grade - 2 semester course Taught by Sandy Borg and Mitzi Howard - is a high school history credit course. Can be used for Literature, Bible and History. Our class offering will cover History only. (Cornerstone’s high school writing course will incorporate some of the literature from this course. See curricula at our cooperative.) Exploring America is an American history high school curriculum combining American history, American literature, and Bible. It will give your high school student a rich understanding of our nation's past as he reads the history narrative, reads classic American literature, completes writing assignments, and studies what the Bible says about issues and ideas in American history. Our cooperative will be using Lightning Literature for the reading and writing assignments using Institute for Excellence in Writing methods. Exploring America presents history from the perspective of faith in God and respect for His Word. Each unit includes a Bible study highlighting spiritual issues related to history. It is comprehensive, giving students a survey of events and issues from European exploration to the war on terror, with extensive coverage of the twentieth century.
The Exploring America Curriculum Package includes three books:
- Volume 1: Columbus through Reconstruction (first semester)
- Volume 2: Late 1800s through the Present (second semester)
- American Voices: A Collection of Documents, Speeches, Essays, Hymns, Poems, and Short Stories from American History (assigned readings)
Completing the full course provides your child with a year's high school credit in American History, English (literature and composition), and Bible. EMT16 - Elementary Music Theory - 11:10 am - 12:00 pm - 1st-6th grades Taught by Jacque Hoge. The goal of elementary music is to develop an appreciation of music, learning how music has changed over the many years from Biblical times to the present. We will also study beginning music theory which will focus on learning to name the notes, treble and bass clef, and other concepts. PHED - Physical Education - Flag Football/Ultimate Frisbee - 1:25 - 2:15 pm - 4th-8th grades- Taught by Noah Beckham, Micah and Caleb Hoge. This course offering is meant to give students the opportunity to play organized games each week with young adults who have been involved in sports for years. Students will first stretch and then play games in the field adjacent our facility or at a nearby park. Water bottles will need to be provided weekly. SP612 - Introduction to Speech - 2:20 - 3:10 (may have to move to 3:15 - 4:05) - 6th-12th grades. Taught by Noah Beckham. Designed to help students learn the fundamentals of speech writing and speech delivery. In order for students to grow more comfortable with speaking in front of others, we will begin with practice speeches drawing from history, poetry, film, music, fiction, and the Bible. We will also use instructional lectures focusing on the basics of posture, volume, expression, and speech writing. Graded assessments will include homework assignments, in-class speeches, and a final exam. FILMM - Filmmaking - 1:25 - 3:10 pm - 7th-12th grades Taught by Scott Howard. Let's make a movie! Filmmaking 101 will teach you everything needed to make your own movie. Classes will combine lectures, clips from great movies, hands-on experience with real filmmaking equipment and visits from professionals in the industry. Each student will make his or her own five-minute film using the steps and techniques learned in class and in the class textbook. Students will write their film's "Treatment" and screenplay, recruit actors and support staff, schedule and direct the shoots, edit the film and possibly even promote it on social media.
